An Overlooked Asset: 100,000 College Students
In 2007, CompeteColumbus, the economic development effort organized by the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce and The Columbus Partnershi, set out to frame a plan to make the most of the temporary presence of this enormous pool of college students who visit our region every year.
Learning of Onebigcampus.com, the successful collaboration between the colleges and stakeholders in Philadelphia, Columbus decided to engage Todd Hoffman, who was responsible for both strategy and implementation of their 7+ year program.
Todd began in Columbus by conducting research on the enrolled student population in order to make strategy recommendations regarding the engagement of area college students.
Joining Todd to share his perspective on this important emerging effort was recent Ohio Wesleyan University graduate, Dan Sharpe. Doug Kridler, president and ceo of The Columbus Foundation and CompeteColumbus Executive Committee was the member responsible for this project's development, and introduced this conversation. |

Compete Globally, Collaborate Locally
Forming international education marketing consortia is proving to be an effective way for U.S. cities, states, and regions to promote their study destinations. This expert panel provided examples of existing U.S. consortia and addressed questions such as: How are these consortia organized, managed and funded? What are the activities and benefits of membership?
At this session, Todd shared experiences from three overseas “Study Philadelphia” recruiting trips and the techniques necessary to build, fund, and sustain regional recruitment-focused collaborations. Under the “Study Philadelphia” banner, colleges have been working together since 2003 to grow the region’s international student population. And with impressive results in spite of marketing funds dramatically lower than other destinations, namely Britain and Australia.
